Real vs. Faux: How to Style Artificial Stems So They Look Freshly Picked

We’ve all seen them—those stiff, overly shiny plastic flowers that look like they belong in a dusty attic. But at Lavender & Birch, we believe artificial florals should be a "secret." They should make your guests lean in, take a sniff, and ask, "Are these real?"

High-quality faux florals are an investment in a beautiful home that never wilts. If you’re ready to bring some permanent spring vibes into your space, here is our guide to styling our favorite shop arrivals.

1. The "Water" Trick

The quickest way to make a faux stem look real? Put it in a glass vase with actual water. Our Tulips are perfect for this. They have a "real-touch" texture that thrives in a simple clear vessel. Just be sure to change the water occasionally so it stays clear—it’s a simple illusion that fools everyone.

2. Embrace the Bend

Real flowers aren’t perfectly straight. They reach for the sun! When you pick up a bundle of our Poppies or Daffodils, don’t leave the stems rigid. Gently bend the wire stems at different angles to mimic how they would grow in a garden. A drooping poppy head looks much more natural and "organic" than one standing at a perfect 90-degree angle.

3. Mix Your Textures

For a centerpiece that looks professionally designed, mix different "weights" of flowers:

  • The Focal Point: Use our lush, full Peonies or classic Roses. These draw the eye and provide the main "pop" of color.

  • The Filler: Add Hydrangeas to fill in the gaps. Their clustered petals create volume and hide the "insides" of the arrangement.

  • The Movement: Use the thin, airy stems of Poppies to add height and a bit of whimsy.

4. Group by Variety

If you prefer a modern, minimalist look, don’t mix them at all. A large glass jar filled purely with our purple Hydrangeas or a dozen white/yellow Daffodils creates a clean, intentional look that feels fresh and upscale.
